Little Colonial Miss Child Costume

The American colonial life took place from approximately 1607 to 1776 and centered around the 13 original colonies in the United States. Most of the settlers were from England, but there were pockets of settlements from other European countries as well.

The Dutch went to the New York area, and settlers from Sweden lived along the Delaware River. They all brought their own ways of living with them, but learned a lot from the native Americans, like which foods to eat, how to prepare them, how to live off the land, etc.

Colonial General Set Child Costume

The colonists wore clothing based on what they wore back in their original lives in England. Quite often, clothing was sent for from England, especially fine clothing. Believe it or not, even the Puritans in New England liked a few fine pieces of silver and gold lace, and silk dresses.

But any elegant clothing was strictly reserved for the upper class, and in several of the colonies, any finery was prohibited by law for the poorer working classes. Thus the way of dressing evolved for the mainstream colonial costume.

Traditional Colonial Girl Child Costume

The dress usually involved long full skirts for women during this colonial period. They also covered their heads with small white linen caps, and when they went outdoors, they covered their caps with the hoods on their capes.

The men wore what is called pantaloons, or knee-length breeches, in all classes. The upper class breeches were just more elaborate, in material and cut. Men wore head coverings, too, like the women, and both men and women wore them in the house and outside the house. The men wore felt hats or wool work caps.

Kids wore clothing exactly like their parents, when it was time for them to stop wearing baby clothes...

Most of the clothing was made out of wool or linen, or a combination of the two. Coarse linen, usually dyed blue, was the fabric used for womens house dresses and mens work shirts. You can see where the modern day inspiration came from for colonial costumes for kids.

George Washington Child Costume

Oh, he’s so cute!  George Washington as a child?  In his long blue jacket all trimmed in gold with wide cuffs.  That goes over the tan vest with buttons and a white ruffled jabot.  And the tan pants match the vest.  He looks very sharp.  Just perfect for that school play or a historical party.  Add one of the colonial wigs and some black boots or boot covers, and he’s all set, looking exactly like George Washington.

Patriot Boy Child Costume

He looks so regal!  Ready to march off in a parade, perhaps protecting our country.  This colonial boy costume has a blue jacket that’s trimmed out in gold — on the collar, and the cuffs (which have white ruffled trim on them), and the attached vest.  Also the very cool epaulets, which have a nice gold trim on them.  There’s gold buttons all over.  A white jabot peeking out from the vest.  And a blue sash across the front.  Then there’s tan pants, and those have black boot toppers attached to them.  So you’ve got the whole outfit.

This childs colonial costume has a blue vest/top with gold buttons.  White long full sleeves with white lace trim at the bottoms.  And a white jabot at the neckline, all trimmed out with white lace.  And some neat blue knickers to match.  To top it all off, there’s the black three-point colonial hat with white trim.  Boy, does he look sharp!  Add some white stockings and black shoes and he’s all set for whatever life has to offer! Betsy Ross – Heroes In History Child Costume

She’s a patriotic beauty in red, white and blue!  Representative of our first American flag.  Cute little dress in red and white.  Red and white striped fullish long skirt.  And a white top with red trim and gold trim criss-crossed down the center front of the bodice.  And little puffed sleeves.  The blue apron is rounded and has white stars on it.  Comes with the little white mop cap to complete this sweet Betsy Ross costume.

Martha Washington Child Costume

Cute little Martha Washington.  In an adorable shiny blue dress with a v-waistline and a full long skirt.  There’s a white inset down the center front bodice, which is criss-crossed with blue satin ribbon.  The square neckline is trimmed with white lace.  The longish sleeves end in a wide gathered white fabric.  Very Martha Washington.  Add your own white tights and perhaps a befitting white wig, too.  Also some appropriate black shoes.

Colonial Girl Child Costume

This girls colonial costume will work for a long period of costumes.  From the 1600s to 1800, this is the type of costume that will work.  You can accessorize it different ways depending upon the time period.  It’s a black peplum pin-striped front-opening jacket with little black bows down the front and on the sleeves.  The puffed sleeves are trimmed out at the bottoms with wide gathered white lace.  And the black skirt is long and full.  Very nice indeed. Martha Washington Colonial Woman Adult Costume

This is a nice, flattering costume fit for Martha Washington.  A lovely jacket/top out of navy pinstripe with a neat little peplum flaring out at the waist.  Front closure adorned with black bows.  And wide gathered white lace at the elbows on the full puffed sleeves.  White lace trim also at the square neckline.  The skirt is black and full and long.  Wear this ladies colonial costume with our black lace-up Amelia boots.  And you have a lovely, lovely costume.

Mrs. Franklin Adult

This costume is totally representative of what women were wearing in the mid-1700s.  It’s a beautiful costume in black with a top and attached peplum (which I just love) trimmed out in gold (very authentic styling).  And wide white lace trim gathered on the bottom of the sleeves.  Also trimmed in white lace on the squarish neckline.  The skirt is full and satiny, as is typical of that period.  Add your own black shoes or the black lace-up Amelia boots.

Amelia (Black) Adult Boots

I just had to show you the boots because they’re so, so cool.  They don’t really lace up to get into them, there’s a side zipper (thank goodness).  But there’s a one inch sculptured heel.  With some nice scallop trim detailing.  They’re just really awesome. American Revolutionary Adult Costume

Okay–this is a top quality costume that will last a long long time.  Perfect for plays, etc. where the costume will get a good workout.  It’s really a masterpiece!  A beautiful blue coat turned up at the hem to reveal tan lining.  Also trimmed out generously in tan gabardine at the cuffs, pockets, collar and the front lapel.  Then topped off with gold buttons and gold trim.  The vest is also made out of tan gabardine and so are the knickers.  You’ll want to add white stockings, white gloves, the white jabot, and your own black shoes, or our colonial shoes.  This is a wonderful colonial period costume.
